Demo by Geoffrey Barbey * April 4th

Geoffrey began a 25-year career in advertising and the commercial film production industry. He was a Producer for major advertising firms in New York and then went on to represent various creative based companies. Clients included commercial film directors and their production companies, digital special effects studios, cell-animation studios, music companies and motion graphic design firms.

“I attended a demonstration conducted by John Philip Osborne at the Ridgewood Art Institute in New Jersey. Watching him paint, while he spoke about his method and reasoning, completely captivated me and I knew I had found someone who could lead me forward. I enrolled in his class the following week and have been painting almost every day since.” (click on images to enlarge)

Demo May 2 * Mike Tiddy

Raised an “Army Brat” in the 1940’s and 1950’s, I travelled the world. Now I’m in my mid 70’s and still travelling! However, now I carry a sketchpad, pens and watercolors no matter where I go. I paint what pleases my eye and what I want to remember. My artwork is perhaps best described as a visual journal of the places that I love and the characters that live within them. I especially love travelling in Europe and I frequently make extended visits to France with side trips to Spain and Italy. While on these journeys I sketch, take hundreds of photographs and paint what I see. Sharing visually what I have learned on my voyage through life is one of my great joys!

My favorite subjects to paint are the Coastal and Blue Ridge mountain regions of North and South Carolina, the French countryside and Paris street scenes. My primary work is in watercolor paintings and pen or graphite sketches.

June 6 meeting was to sketch a live model.  Jean Olderman was the model. Artists hard at work.

Aug. 1st * Sue Byrne Russell demo

“Uphill Climb” by Sue Byrne Rusell depicts a group of bicyclists heading uphill.

Sue Byrne Russell, noted local artist, will do one of her popular critiquing programs at the upcoming meeting of the Transylvania Art Guild on Thursday, Sept. 5.

For this program, members of the guild will bring paintings to the meeting which Russell will critique before the group and will suggest possible improvements based on her years of experience and expertise. She enjoys helping artists seek and find ways to energize their art. By guiding each artist to “say” what he/she wants the viewer to “see,” she provides tips to convey ideas, simplify compositions, while enjoying the process.

Russell and her husband, Padgett Cleveland, lived and worked for 20 years in Saudi Arabia and Germany. They traveled the world with backpacks, sketch books, cameras and journals. She now maintains a studio and gallery, as well as a summer artist retreat, at Hemlock Studios in Cedar Mountain and assists the director at the annual Kanuga Watermedia Workshops.

Russell holds a BFA in graphic design from the University of Georgia and a MA in art/art education from Arizona State University. She has been a secondary art teacher, college instructor, a workshop instructor and an exhibiting artist in the United State, Saudi Arabia and Germany.

The Transylvania Art Guild is an association of artists who are interested in visual arts. The guild meets the first Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. in the Transylvania County Rec-reation Center located off Ecusta Road behind the Pisgah Elementary School. Each meeting features an experienced artist who presents a program on some aspect of art. Meetings are open to the public.
